Koa’s Story
Koa came to our hospital just two days after birth. Sadly, her mother experienced complications during delivery and passed away, leaving Koa without her mom and in need of immediate care.
By the time Koa arrived, she had not eaten for approximately 6–8 hours. She was cold, vulnerable, and in urgent need of warmth and nourishment. We immediately placed her in a warm incubator and began her feeding regimen.
The Diagnosis
After a thorough examination, Dr. Rachel Balleras determined that Koa had a good heart rate and clear lungs. However, her body temperature was dangerously low and required immediate intervention.
Treatment & Care
Dr. Balleras recommended bringing Koa’s body temperature up to 95–99°F and bottle-feeding her every 2–3 hours.
Because newborn kittens cannot eliminate on their own, Koa also needs to be gently stimulated after each feeding. A warm, soft, damp cloth is used to gently stimulate the urethral and anal areas, along with the lower belly, mimicking the care a mother cat would provide. Care must be taken to avoid the umbilical cord.
For now, Koa will remain in our care while she grows stronger and becomes healthy enough to move into a foster home.
